Defending Lee Boyd Malvo

Lee Boyd Malvo’s case remains one of the most highly publicized trials in Virginia history. A disadvantaged youth, Malvo was charged in the series of crimes labeled by the media as “The Beltway Sniper Cases.” Selected to be part of Malvo’s defense team, Mark Petrovich and Thomas Walsh represented Lee Boyd Malvo from shortly after his arrest in 2002 through his final sentencing in April, 2004.

Mr. Malvo was prosecuted along with John Alan Muhammad, the man deemed to be the mastermind behind the killings. Muhammed was subsequently convicted, sentenced to death, and executed on November 10, 2009, but the Malvo team, including Petrovich and Walsh, presented mitigating evidence for the jury to consider and his life was spared, the jury sentencing him to life in prison.

Mr. Malvo’s trial serves as a testament to Petrovich & Walsh’s ability to manage the extensive pressures exerted by the media during highly charged, highly publicized cases.
